It is here, in the tangles of branches and softness of moss where most secretive of the Faerie live. Many things may lie in the turn of the path. Perhaps a cottage awaits where a wise woman will teach you the secrets of her garden. Or perhaps you will find a maiden enclosed within a coffin of glass, waiting in stillness for the touch of lips upon her own. Or perhaps you will find a castle surrounded by briar. It is within the forest that many adventures of Faerie begin. The strange mists that filter through the stillness often form into vague shapes of beasts and monsters, confusing and frightening the mortal traveler. This place is a place of illusions, of voices and sounds and seeings that will try to take the traveler from off her path, lead her into the forest, and make her forever lost within. Perhaps she will remember to gather pebbles to drop behind her as she investigates the strange and beautiful music that floats through the air with the mist.

wishing

I keep three wishes ready,
Lest I should chance to meet,
Any day a fairy
Coming down the street.

I'd hate to have stammer,
Or have to think them out,
For it's very hard to think things up
When a fairy is about.

And I'd hate to lose my wishes,
For fairies fly away,
And perhaps I'd never chance
On any other day.

So I keep three wishes ready,
Lest I should chance to meet,
Any day a fairy
Coming down the street.

By Anette Wynne

**From blowing dandelion seeds into the air to throwing a penny into a fountain, we have all felt inspired to make a wish, to whisper our secret desires into the ears of the universe and wait for signs that we have been heard. Some wishes come true while others remain ethereal visions that either stay with us or fade like a start in the light of morning. Whether they come true or not, wishes are important missives, expressing our heart’s desire as well as our intention to create something new in our lives. When we wish for something our consciousness opens to receiving it, like a flower unfolding its petals to receive a bee.

If you have given up wishing in favour of more adult pursuits you might want to bring its magick back into your life. The next time you see the first star of the evening or find yourself in front of a birthday cake covered in flaming candles give yourself the gift of the magickal realm that you knew so well as a child – close your eyes, open your mind and make your wish

Brownies

Brownies are the best known of the industrious domestic hobgoblins. The brownie's land is over all the North of England and up into the highlands of Scotland. The brownie is small, ragged and shaggy. Some say he has a nose so small as to be hardly more than two nostrils. He is willing to do all odd jobs about a house, but sometimes he untidies what he has been left to tidy. There are several stories of brownies riding to fetch the nurse for their mistress. The brownie can accept no payment, and the surest way to drive him away is to leave him a suit of clothes. Bread and milk and other dainties can be left unobtrusively, but even they must not be openly offered. The Cornish Browney is of the same nature. His special office is to get the bees to settle. When the bees swarm the housewife beats a tin, and calls out: 'Browney! Browney!' until the brownie comes invisibly to take charge

Yule time

of course if this blog only opens the months of Midsummer, we will miss lots of faery lore about Yule time... so here are a few faery notes for those who are in the Yule time....

Holly ~ Holly berries are said to be a fairy favourite

Mistletoe - The most sacred herb of the Druids. Mistletoe is a magickal activator. In Faery spells, use a dash of Mistletoe taken on Summer Solstice to empower your workings with Faery magick. Adding mistletoe to a fairy spell on Midsummer Night's Eve makes the spell more powerful. Can also attract unpleasant tree faeries

* Hang little bells on the Yule Tree to call the spirits and fairies

Midsummer Magick.....

In folklore it is believed that the Summer Solstice in particularly Midsummer's Eve is a time when Faeries would bestow goodluck on humans. Field and forest elves, sprites, and fairies abound in great numbers - making this a great time to commune with them. An old ritual for children was to place food out in the garden for the Faeries who would then sometimes leave crystals as token of thanks. Leaving out a little food for the fairies is also common practice at Midsummer. Milk, water, butter, honey, wine and bread are their favoured foods.

FoXgLovE

Name is derived from "Little Folks' Glove". Folk names for foxglove include Fairy Thimbles, Fairy Glove, Little folks glove, Fairy Fingers, Fairy Petticoats, Fairy Cap. Some have seen the fairy dwellers within, and in their fear have given the flower strange folk names, for it is called Fairy Weed, Dead Men's Bellows, Bloody Man's Fingers and Witch's Thimble.
Foxglove is strongly associated with fairies, who are said to wear the tiny flowers as hats and gloves. Foxglove is used in fairy magic and for the evocation of elves or earth elementals. The leaves are said to grant release from fairy enchantment. Planting foxglove is an invitation to fairies to enter your garden and is a favourite of earth elementals You will please the fairy folk if you grow the tall foxglove to nod in your garden. Fairies care for every flower and herb, but they find the foxglove especially hospitable.
Wearing foxglove is a charm to attract fairy energy. A few of the leaves and flowers of the foxglove, sparsely scattered, will bring a sweet moodiness to your bath time which can do no harm. Put a dried sprig of Foxglove in a talisman to keep you surrounded in Faery light. Plant Foxglove near your front door to invite the Faery in.
There is a poison in the plant which cause drunkenness and frenzy, so decline foxglove tea for it is sinister. The source of the modern heart drug Digitalis, Foxglove can have seriously dangerous results if taken internally. DO NOT INGEST!!

Faery Charm Bags

these charm bags are made to establish or maintain an energy connection with the Fae, create the pouch and hang from a tree in the yard, a fence post, or place somewhere indoors. They can attract Faeries to dwell in and protect yard and/or home; or help you to gain a Faery companion, to help you seek Faerie aid in magic or for you to dream of Faeries

Materials:

lavender and vervain herbs; lavender fabric cut in a 6 inch square, small moonstone or fluorite, pale green or pale lavender ribbon, any decorative items such as feathers, holey stones, shells, etc. to adorn the outside of the bag.

put the herbs and stone in the center of the cloth. Gather up ends of cloth and tie bag shut with ribbon. Create a loop with which to hang the bag from a tree branch, knot the ribbon 3 times and add any decorative items to dangle from ribbon

Activate the Fairy Charm Bag:

store in a dark place until Full Moon, then place the pouch in the light of the Full Moon .. and say these words:

"Come to me Blessed Fair Ones,

By the light of thy Faerie Moon!

Bless this charm and grant my boon!

With this Charm may ye ever abide in friendship with me,

for as this I will,

So Mote It Be!"

let the pouch stay in the moonlight 1 hour, then place where desired

a candle for the fae ~ Full Moon

To be done on Full Moon, light a light blue or silver candle and say:

"A candle for the folk of Faerie,
An honour on this full moon night.
Come and play a dance merry,
and bring with thee the sight.
What I ask will thee show?
Without rhyme or spell?
When I peak into the flame
Will thee the future tell?"

Ask a question if you wish and then look at the candle flame and notice its shape, any shadows it casts on the walls or any images or feelings. This will be your answer from the fae.

The Child and the Faeries

The woods are full of faeries!
The trees are all alive;
The river overflows with them,
See how they dip and dive!
What funny little fellows!
What dainty little dears!
They dance and leap,
and prance and peep,
And utter fairy cheers!
I'd like to tame a fairy,
To keep it on a shelf,
And dress its little self.
I'd teach it pretty manners,
It always should say "please",
And then you know I'd make it sew,
And curtsey with its knees!

to see faeries ~ wild Thyme

*Gather wild thyme and carry it with you, or put it on the eyelids (with your eyes closed) and sleep on a Faerie hill, this will supposedly guarantee your seeing fairies.

*The tops of the Wild Thyme must be gathered near the side of a faerie hill. Wild thyme, gathered from the side of a fairy mound, is especially potent for use in fairy magic.

*Wearing thyme will increase your ability to see the Sidhe.

*Sprinkle it at the base of your door, and on windowsills to invite the Faery to enter your home.

*When used as a bedtime fragrance, thyme draws the wee folk into your sleeping chambers.

*Wearing a sprig of wild thyme, or essential oil of thyme, is said to help one to see fairies.
