It is here, in the tangles of branches and softness of moss where most secretive of the Faerie live. Many things may lie in the turn of the path. Perhaps a cottage awaits where a wise woman will teach you the secrets of her garden. Or perhaps you will find a maiden enclosed within a coffin of glass, waiting in stillness for the touch of lips upon her own. Or perhaps you will find a castle surrounded by briar. It is within the forest that many adventures of Faerie begin. The strange mists that filter through the stillness often form into vague shapes of beasts and monsters, confusing and frightening the mortal traveler. This place is a place of illusions, of voices and sounds and seeings that will try to take the traveler from off her path, lead her into the forest, and make her forever lost within. Perhaps she will remember to gather pebbles to drop behind her as she investigates the strange and beautiful music that floats through the air with the mist.

* Clover *

Clover is a sacred faery plant. Fields of clover are believed to attract faeries, a four-leaf clover is said to provide protection against the fae and to be able to break fairy spells and glamors. Wearing a four-leaf clover in your hat supposedly grants you the power to see invisible fairies, as does anointing yourself with an ointment made from four-leaf clover, or carrying a charm made of seven grains of wheat and a four-leaf clover. The faeries of clover often have an elfin quality about them and assist in finding love and fidelity. They can aid in developing psychic abilities. The clover faeries reveal themselves readily to individuals who display kindness toward nature. They often first show themselves through flickering lights around the clover itself. The faeries of white clover are most powerful and apparent around the time of the full moon. Ordinary water can become enchanted by infusing it with clover found at favourite haunts of faeries. Washing the eyes with this water can awaken fae sight.

The four leaf clover spell
If a maid will slip a four~leaf clover into her left shoe, and tie a garland of myrtle and clover around her brow, she will see the fairies as the moon comes up.

Robyn, I have two four-leaved clovers, that i found when i was 16. I pressed them , and I still have one,One I gave to a dear friend who had need of it more than I. all these years later. The verdant green of my one is now faded, but it does not feel any less magical to me, and has always accompanied me on important visits , hospital appointments etc. When Andy had his op for cancer, and i didnt know if he would survive the op, it was with me.

a lovely post, as always.

I have never found a 4-leaf clover. I have a cat named Clover though. :)

So the fact that I have found 2 four leaf clovers explains why I gave birth to a fairy and a gnome....right???

I use to see 4 leaf clovers when I was a kid, but it has been a long time. I enjoyed hearing about the fairies and the clover!

=^..^=
I just two summers ago planted clover into the wild violet lawns in back ... because I wanted to try to grow four-leaf clovers and make clover chains!

I had not any idea how special ... and now I wonder: Is what I think of as spilled glitter, catching the light really flittering faerie lights about the clover flowers?

I am entranced by this notion!
